Why You Should Leave the Peel on Your Apple Slices

April 13th, 2015 · No Comments

'SnowSweet'(TM) apple.Kids are notorious for asking for peeled apples, or for eating around the skin of the fruit. Unfortunately, when you skip the peel, you’re also skipping out on the most nutrient-rich part of the fruit. In Dippin’ Stix apple and dip packages, we leave the peel on, and you should too!

A Good Source of Fiber
The average apple contains about 4.5 grams of fiber. A high fiber diet keeps your digestive system in check, lowers cholesterol levels, helps control blood sugar levels, and can aid in weight loss and maintenance. The average adult should consume about 25-35 grams of fiber each day, and an apple is a great way to jump start that number!

However, if you don’t eat the peel, you are losing out on nearly half of the fiber in an apple slice. This negates the apple’s title of a “good source of fiber” as the cutoff for that classification is 3 grams.

Vitamins Galore

  • Vitamin C — An apple with the skin on has about 8.4 milligrams of Vitamin C. This vitamin aids in the growth and repair of tissue all over your body, helps the body make collagen, and maintains the health of bones and teeth. A good dose everyday is especially important for growing children (and maybe accident prone adults, too!).
  • Vitamin A — In appropriate doses, Vitamin A helps maintain the health of your eyes and vision, keeping your eyesight better for longer. It also supports growth plus the immune and reproduction systems.
  • Others — Though Vitamin A and C are most prominent in apple slices, the flesh and peel also contains Vitamin E, K, and B.

Plain and simple, if you are not eating the peel, you are not receiving all the benefits of an apple. But we know that sometimes we just can’t change our tastes. That’s why Dippin’ Stix pairs our apple slices with delicious premium dips so that even the pickiest of eaters can enjoy apples as a tasty treat.
